Report: New York Jets signing Jamin Davis to one-year contract

Linebacker Jamin Davis has a new home. The former Washington Commanders first round pick is reportedly re-signing with the New York Jets.

According to Jordan Schultz, Davis will have a one-year contract with the Jets. There, he will look to reset his career under new head coach Aaron Glenn. That’s after Davis had spent the 2024 season with four different teams.

In October of 2024, Davis was released by Washington. Then, in a series of signings, He subsequently ended up playing for the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and eventually the Jets.

In the end, Davis only played nine games in what was a disjointed 2024 season. In those games, he managed 18 total tackles, two tackles for a loss, and a sack. Over the course of his four-year career, he’s played in 54 total games and has 287 total tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, and 8.0 sacks. He’s also forced a pair of fumbles and has an interception.

Coming out of Kentucky, there were massive expectations on Davis. He was selected with the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. That came after an impressive pre-draft process for Davis, which saw him run a 4.47-second 40-yard dash and put up 21 reps on the bench press.

At the NFL level, Davis has shown some positional versatility. That has included playing both as an inside linebacker and kicking outside. At times, he has even played more of an edge rusher role.

Washington underwent some major changes in 2023, with a new front office and coaching staff coming in to take over. Since then, the Commanders found on-field success as a team. However, it did quickly become clear that they wanted to make changes with Davis. First, that came in switching up his position on the defense. Then, in April of 2024, they declined his fifth-year option. Sixth months later, after minimal production in the season, the Commanders released him.

This comes at a time when the New York Jets themselves are hitting the reset button. New head coach Aaron Glenn is known for his success on the defensive side of the ball. There, the biggest question he’s facing relates to who the starting quarterback is going to be, with the Jets since signing Justin Fields. However, that’s far from the team’s only issue and there is hope the defense will take strides forward.

The last time the New York Jets made the playoffs was in 2010. That’s the longest active playoff drought in the NFL.
