The Packers made a splash in extending pass rusher Preston Smith on Monday morning. Now, they’re keeping part of their defensive nucleus in Green Bay — re-signing star linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
“The #Packers are expected to re-sign LB De’Vondre Campbell, source said,” tweeted Rapoport. “Keeping one of their best defenders.
“It’s a 5-year deal worth $50 million for Campbell.”
A former fourth round pick out of Minnesota, Campbell was one of the best free agent signings in the league last offseason. The linebacker bet on himself with a one-year contract, and was named a First-team All-Pro. Now, Campbell is cashing in with Green Bay.
In his breakout season with the Packers, Campbell accumulated 132 total tackles, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. As you can see, Campbell did it all for Green Bay.
The Packers have Super Bowl aspirations in 2022. Retaining De’Vondre Campbell will help them get closer to that goal.
Report: Packers agree to huge extension with defensive star
Moreover, Preston Smith is also getting paid. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former Mississippi State star and Green Bay have agreed to a huge four-year extension.
“The #Packers have agreed to terms with pass-rusher Preston Smith on a 4-year extension worth $52.5M in new money, source said,” tweeted Rapoport. “He gets over $65M over 5 years in all with a chance to make $71M. He gets $14M in year 1. So, one Smith brother sticks around.”

Since joining the Packers prior to the 2019 season, Smith has been reliable as anyone. The star defender has never missed a game, and he’s performed when on the field. In his time with the Packers, Smith has accumulated 136 total tackles, 25.0 sacks and three forced fumbles in three seasons.
Additionally, Rapoport mentions that Smith’s extension will help the Packers lower their salary cap for the 2022-23 season.
“Aaron Rodgers’ new deal drastically lowered his cap number for 2022. Preston Smith is expected to do the same,” added Rapoport.
Preston Smith will be sticking around as Green Bay looks to capture a Lombardi Trophy. Time will tell who joins him in the quest.
