Panthers receiver Terrace Marshall is seeking a trade. That’s according to a report from ESPN, which said Carolina gave him permission to do so.

Jeremy Fowler, quoting unidentified sources, said the Panthers have spoken with Vince Taylor, Marshall’s agent. Marshall wants to go to a team where he’d play a more prominent role in the offense. The Panthers selected Marshall, the former LSU star, in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Panthers coach Frank Reich apologized for not playing Marshall more earlier this season

It’s no secret that Marshall has been disappointed this season. The Panthers are winless and Marshall is only fourth-best on the depth chart. He’s listed on the second team behind DJ Chark. But in game five, Marshall was listed as active, yet didn’t play. Then last Sunday, he saw action for only 22 snaps in the Panthers’ 42-21 loss to the Dolphins. Young threw his way three times and Marshall didn’t register a catch.

After game five, Marshall talked about his disappointment with his inactivity.

“I have no clue why I didn’t play,” Marshall told reporters. “It was surprising. I didn’t expect to sit out the whole game. It just happened.”

What possibly bugged Marshall the most is he had nine catches for 56 yards in week four. If Young needs possession guys, Marshall certainly can fill that role. Of course, going winless through six games probably amplifies the angst.

Panthers coach Frank Reich acknowledged it was his fault for not involving Marshall more.

“So that was poor communication by me,” Reich told reporters. “I wanted to make sure that our guys knew to kind of make sure he had some playing time and that there would be opportunities. So that was my fault.”

At LSU, Marshall grew accustomed to winning. He played a role on the 2019 national championship team. That’s when the Tigers fielded an incredible offense. Quarterback Joe Burrow threw passes to Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Marshall. Chase and Jefferson are dominant NFL receivers. Marshall wants to be one, whether it’s with the Panthers or another league team. It’s not clear which team might be in the market for a receiver. The NFL trade deadline is Oct. 31.
