Patrick Mahomes has picked the perfect time to play his best football of the season.

Ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, reports have come out on the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his performance throughout practice leading up to Sunday night’s big game. If practice makes perfect, then all signs are pointing toward the former NFL MVP having a huge game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“The Chiefs will be putting [the] final touches on their preparations [Saturday] with a walk-through at the Raiders’ facility. They’ll also have final meetings and a team picture,” NFL insider Jeff Darlington wrote in a post on X. “All I keep hearing… Mahomes looks even more dialed in than usual this week. If he plays like he practiced…”

Compared to previous seasons, 2023-24 was a bit of a down year for Mahomes. He threw for 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns — both lows he hasn’t experienced since 2019 — to go with a career-high 14 interceptions while leading the Chiefs to an 11-6 record in 16 appearances. His QBR, which is an efficiency stat similar to yards per play or yards per attempt, was the lowest it has ever been at 63.0.

To put into perspective how productive Mahomes has been throughout his career — his passing yards, touchdown passes and QBR all rank within the top 10 for quarterbacks in the league this year.

Still, it seems as though Mahomes has kicked his efficiency into another gear since the playoffs started. He has yet to turn the ball over in 103 passing attempts, has five touchdown passes and 718 passing yards to show for it, and has massively improved his QBR to 90.2.

Against the Buffalo Bills, Mahomes had six incompletions on the afternoon while averaging 9.3 yards per pass and finished the game with a 74 percent completion percentage. Even more, before the AFC Championship game Mahomes had not been sacked for the entire postseason.

As Mahomes has always said, Chiefs head coach Any Reid’s offense takes all 11 players to execute — but Mahomes’ success has seemingly elevated the rest of the Chiefs roster. Isiah Pacheco has been productive out of the backfield with 254 yards and three rushing touchdowns in three playoff games. Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ favorite target, has been just as lethal for the Chiefs, but wideouts Rashee Rice and Marquez Valdes-Scantling have all made plays throughout Kansas City’s playoff run.

It’s going to take the whole village, but with Mahomes as the leader — and if he is as locked in as reports suggest — the Chiefs might be well on their way to winning the third Super Bowl of the Patrick Mahomes era.
