Report: Philadelphia Eagles to trade CJ Gardner-Johnson to Houston Texans

The Philadelphia Eagles are trading safety CJ Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans for former first-round pick Kenyon Green, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The trade also includes a pick swap, as the Eagles will get a 2026 fifth-round pick, and the Texans will get a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Gardner-Johnson signed a three-year, $27 million contract with the Eagles in March last year. For the 2024 season, Garnder-Johnson played in 16 regular season games and recorded 59 tackles, 12 passes defended and six interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown. He then appeared in all four of the Eagles’ playoff games and helped the team win Super Bowl LIX.
This was CJ Gardner-Johnson’s second stint with the Eagles, as his first was in 2022. During the 2022 season, Gardner-Johnson tallied 67 tackles, eight passes defended and six interceptions. He helped the Eagles reach Super Bowl LVII and had four tackles in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gardner-Johnson was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Florida Gators star played in New Orleans for three seasons before joining the Eagles in 2022.

Before Super Bowl LIX, Gardner-Johnson talked about playing in New Orleans again. “I think to me, it’s just a blessing. It’s just a full-circle moment. It just shows guys around the world – anybody can do it. I mean, coming from where I’m from, anybody can overcome a lot of things,” Garnder-Johnson said, per the Eagles’ official website.
“I think getting drafted by New Orleans, I didn’t think I was going to be able to stay on the team. Getting drafted, you know, going fourth round, it was a trial. And going back to the spot I got drafted to play in the Super Bowl is amazing. I want to thank Mickey Loomis (Saints General Manager) for starting my career, and thanking Howie (Roseman) and Jeffrey (Lurie) for continuing my career. I just want to just thank everybody that’s a part of this process because it’s going to be a happy moment for me.”
Kenyon Green was selected by the Texans at No. 15 overall in the 2022 draft. In three seasons, Green has played in 27 games with 23 starts on the Texans’ offensive line.
