Mitch Trubisky and the Pittsburgh Steelers have mutually decided to part ways, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

Per the report, Trubisky recently spoke with those in the Steelers organization to assess his future. Both have decided it best for the 29-year-old quarterback to get a fresh start with a new team out of free agency.

Trubisky has amassed over 12,000 career passing yards and has thrown 72 touchdowns over a seven-year career. He started at quarterback for four seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected No. 2 overall in 2017. He was named to the 2018 Pro Bowler during his time in Chicago.

After spending one season with the Buffalo Bills in 2021 as Josh Allen‘s backup, Trubisky made the jump to Pittsburgh in 2022 where he split time under center with Kenny Pickett during the first two years of his career. He ultimately contributed 1,884 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions to the Steelers over 12 games played across his two seasons with the franchise.

During his stay as North Carolina, Trubisky only started once season in Chapel Hill. He ended up starting all 13 games for UNC in 2016 where he finished the year with 4,762 yards — a number that he is still chasing in the NFL — and a whopping 41 touchdowns.

Trubisky will now seek his fourth NFL team in five years, but is a player that always makes the most of his opportunities. With 12,536 passing yards under his belt to go with 72 touchdowns compared to 48 interceptions on a 64.1% completion percentage, the former Tar Heel is a proven backup and can rise to the occasion if his number is called.

He’s also a 1,000-yard career rusher, having put together 1,173 yards and 13 additional touchdowns since joining the league. A massive chunk of that total is thanks to him compiling 421 rushing yards during his Pro Bowl season.

His last game in black and yellow came on Dec. 16 during a 30-13 loss against the Indianapolis Colts. Trubisky finished the game completing 16-of-23 passes for 169 yards while throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.

Mason Rudolph — who hadn’t thrown a pass since the 2021 Christmas holiday season at the time — would go on to start the final four games of the season for Pittsburgh, including the Steelers’ wild-card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, where they lost 31-17.

The decision, while not in Trubisky’s favor, helped the Steelers win their final three games of the regular season and clinch the last playoff spot in the AFC.
