Report: President Donald Trump expected to attend Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans

President Donald Trump is planning to attend Super Bowl LIX in Orleans, becoming the first sitting president to attend the big game. The New York Post said Punchbowl News first reported Trump heading to the Super Bowl, and the news was later confirmed by federal law enforcement sources.

Trump’s attendance will mean there will be extra security, with the game taking place 39 days after a terrorist attack in the city. A man drove a pickup truck through crowds celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people and injuring at least 35.

Donald Trump will also be featured during the Super Bowl pregame show as Fox News’ chief political anchor Bret Baier will conduct a pre-taped interview with him. The interview will air in the 3 p.m. ET hour on the Fox Super Bowl Sunday pregame show.

Super Bowl LIX would be Trump’s first visit to a sporting event since his second inauguration in January. However, the 78-year-old has appeared in multiple sporting events over the last decade, including the Army-Navy game in December.

If Trump attends the Super Bowl, he will likely talk to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has worked to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in the federal government. During Goodell’s Super Bowl press conference on Monday, he was asked if Trump’s move on DEI will impact the NFL’s policies to promote diversity.

“Our policies have been designed to be well within the law, well within the practice,” Goodell said on Monday, per NFL.com. “There are no quotas in our system. This is about opening that funnel and bringing the best talent into the NFL.

“We also believe we are doing the right thing for the NFL and our policies are consistent with the current administration as well as the last administration.”

Goodell added, “We think we’re better when we get different perspectives, people with different backgrounds, whether they’re women or men or people of color, we make ourselves stronger and we make ourselves better when we have that. It’s something that I think it will have a tremendous impact on this lead for many, many years. We win on the field with the best talent and the best coaching, and I think the same’s true off the field.”
