Report: Sam Cosmi, Commanders agree to terms on four-year contract extension
Sam Cosmi is about to sign a new contract with the Washington Commanders before the 2024 NFL season kicks off. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Cosmi and the Commanders have agreed to terms on a new four-year contract extension. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Cosmi signed a four-year $74 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed.
Washington selected Cosmi in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he has become an anchor on the offensive line. The former Texas Longhorns offensive lineman started in all 17 regular season games last season and played in 40 games in three years.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn gave a lot of praise to Cosmi while speaking to reporters last month. “Sam Cosmi has shown really consistent play,” Quinn said. “You would have thought he’d been a guard for a really long time. In fact, he wasn’t you know from moving from tackle to guard. So I would say his ability to stay square, to pull, he’s an athlete that’s inside. He’s somebody that has impressed me by the size of him.”
Cosmi played right guard the entire 2023 season after starting his NFL career at right tackle. It turned out to be a smart move by Washington as Cosmi is ranked the third-best guard in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus. The only two guards that are ranked higher than Cosmi are Joe Thuney of the Kansas City Chiefs and Chris Lindstrom of the Atlanta Falcons.

Sam Cosmi wants to be the ‘best in this league’
In July, Cosmi spoke to reporters about how he sees himself as a player entering his fourth season. “Last year was essentially my first year really playing guard, and I felt like I was able to put in my identity,” Cosmi explained, per Commadners.com. “I want to be one of the best in this league. I feel like I am one of the best in this league. I’m going to be dirty, I’m going to be nasty. I’m not going to take, excuse my language, [expletive] from anybody. So, that’s what I’m going to do every time I step on that field, and that’s the type of player I’m going to be.”
Cosmi also talked about Jayden Daniels who will be the Commanders’ new starting quarterback. “I don’t get the me guy thing. I think he wants the betterment of the team,” Cosmi said. “He’s learning. Typically, when you’re a rookie you go into this, you’re kind of like a little bit more quiet just trying to learn the ropes and seeing that I see that. It’s not like, ‘Hey, look at me, look at me’ type of thing, which is great. He could be like that. He’s not. And I think he’s earning respect from a lot of guys around the building.”
