Report: Sean Mannion accepting job to coach quarterbacks, passing game with Green Bay Packers

Sean Mannion is expected to accept the job to coach quarterbacks and passing game with the Green Bay Packers next season, per report.

Mannion spent the past nine years as a quarterback in the NFL, where he had stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks, where he had three separate stints with both the Vikings and Seahawks. He is a product of Oregon State.

He completes his NFL career having appeared in 14 games where he completed a total of 67 passes for 573 yards and one touchdown.

He joins Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s staff and will work directly with starting quarterback Jordan Love — who impressed many unsuspecting Packers fans this season.

In his first regular season as the full-time starter, Love was spectacular down the stretch throwing for 4,159 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns. The only other quarterbacks in NFL history to exceed those totals in their first year as the full-time starter are Patrick Mahomes and Kurt Warner. 

On top of that, Love carved up the Dallas Cowboys secondary throughout the Packers wild card playoff win over America’s team, putting on yet another spectacular performance.

He completed 16 of 20 passes for 272 yards, while tossing in three touchdown passes with no interceptions. That gave him a 158.3 passer rating, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to do that in his playoff debut.

Now, Mannion gets the opportunity to aid Love in 2024 as the Packers look to take another leap in year two of his tenure as QB1.

Packers uncertain if David Bakhtiari will return to team

The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision looming on the status of offensive tackle David Bakhtiari. The veteran lineman’s contract delivers a massive hit to the team’s cap space for 2024, and his health over the last three seasons has the front office exploring options.

Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst discussed Bakhtiari’s contract this week amid speculation that the team will opt to cut him. He’s been with the team since they drafted him in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and he became the only rookie to start at left tackle that year. Deciding to part ways with him to save money won’t be an easy choice.

“We’re still at the very beginning stages of looking at how we’re going to move forward with all that,” Gutekunst said. “Obviously, David’s been through a really rough stretch with the injury stuff. He’s going through a very major surgery, trying to get back to where he’s able to play. We’re monitoring that. I know he’s working his tail off. Once we’re down the road and see where he’s at health-wise, we’ll make those decisions.”
