Report: Washington Commanders working toward signing Trace McSorley
Trace McSorley will likely be playing for the Washington Commanders after spending time with three different NFL teams last year. According to Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan, the former Penn State quarterback plans to sign with Washington ahead of the team’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday. It’s possible McSorley could see action on Saturday since Sam Hartman is dealing with a shoulder injury.
McSorley was a member of the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023 but did not see any on-field action. He last played in an NFL regular season game in 2022 as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.
During the 2022 season, McSorley played in six games and threw for 412 yards, zero touchdowns and five interceptions with a 42.8 passer rating. He made one start for the Cardinals that year and lost the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16. He was benched for David Blough in Week 17.
The Baltimore Ravens selected McSorley in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, the Virginia native was the Ravens’ third-string quarterback behind Lamar Jackson and Robert Griffin III. In those two seasons, McSorley played in three games and threw for 90 yards and one touchdown.

While at Penn State, McSorley notched a 31-9 record in three seasons as the starting QB. He led the Nittany Lions to a Big Ten title in 2016 and was selected to the All-Big Second Team that season and in 2017.
How Trace McSorley fits with Commanders
If the Commadners sign McSorley, he will provide depth to a group that includes Hartman, Jeff Driskel, Marcus Mariota and rookie starter Jayden Daniels. Earlier this month Daniels talked about being ready to be QB 1 for the Commanders.
“I still got some way to go,” he said, per the Commanders’ official website. “Just little stuff, go out there and still compete. Obviously, what Coach DQ [Head Coach Dan Quinn] and them said, but at the end of the day, it’s their decision. I trust them fully with their plan and stuff like that, bringing me along. So, that’s up to them at this point. But for me, I just go out there and [say], ‘How can I better myself each and every day?’ And just go out there and compete hard.”
