Chris Buescher did not make the Cup Series playoffs this season, failing to find Victory Lane or race his way in on points. Buescher was close on a handful of occasions, but the RFK Racing driver can easily point to the May 5 race at Kansas as the defining moment in his regular season.

On that night, we saw the closest finish in NASCAR history. Larson edged out Buescher by 0.001 seconds, a finish which still haunts him all these months later. This Sunday, Buescher and the Cup Series return to Kansas for the Round of 12 opener. Just in case there happens to be another photo finish, RFK wants the racetrack to be prepared and make sure the start-finish line has the “straightest line of all-time” going from top to bottom.

Chris Buescher gets a second shot at Kansas after heartbreak in May

After the finish to the race in May, RFK posted a photo on X of the start-finish line showing that the paint job was uneven. Clearly, RFK is going to be on the lookout this time around.

“I’ve watched it plenty,” Buescher said a week after the photo finish. “I’ve replayed it in my head no less than 100 times and that’s probably pretty conservative. Yeah, I’ve got a list of things I would do different going back. Just need to be in that situation again. Taken a lot of good things out of it, a couple of bad.”

Now, Buescher did eventually get his win. It came earlier this month at Watkins Glen after he outdueled road course ace Shane van Gisbergen.

Heading into Sunday’s race at Kansas, Buescher will look to not only wash away the pain from the May race, but once again play spoiler as he did at Watkins Glen.
