Rich Eisen believes the Washington Commanders is the team the NFL is rooting for to land now-former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

The Commanders have been stuck in mediocrity for what feels like forever, but an ownership change and a ton of assets this offseason has morale improving. Now, the NFL Network analyst believes Belichick could slot right in and make the Commanders appointment television.

During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Eisen explained his reasoning, adding that the Commanders would become a team of national interest with Belichick leading the charge.

“Let him go against Dallas twice a year, on Thanksgiving once in a while, let him go into Philadelphia, and try and bring the Commanders back to prominence in late windows on Fox as much as possible,” Eisen said. “If you’re the league, I think that’s where you would pinpoint his location.”

While the NFL would love it, we’re willing to bet fans in the DMV area would also. After many seasons of disappointment, landing arguably the greatest coach in NFL history to lead your team would be an amazing turn of events.

Alas, it could be the first big move of a new era for Washington, as they tabbed San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters for the big chair for the Commanders franchise. He comes with a ton of hype behind him, as Peters has been lauded for his work with the 49ers.

Peters has a long track record of success working in front offices. He’s been a part of Super Bowl runs while working with the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots at various points in his career.

Since joining the 49ers organization in 2017, Peters has been a key consigliere to general manager John Lynch in assembling one of the best rosters in the NFL

It’s now up to Peters to find the next head coach for Washington, after they decided to move on from Ron Rivera earlier this offseason.

Rivera, 62, had been on the hot seat with Washington having dropped seven games in a row after a 4-5 start. The Dallas Cowboys made it eight straight in the season finale Sunday with a 38-10 win. Rivera has been at the helm in D.C. since the 2020 season, when he was hired to replace Jay Gruden.

The Commanders captured an NFC East title in Rivera’s inaugural season, albeit with a 7-9 record. Since then, Washington has gone 19-31 with zero playoff appearances.

If Washington can land Bill Belichick, coupled with the No. 2 overall pick and a ton of cap space, they could expedite their rebuild. Time will tell, but Rich Eisen may have a point, and the Commanders should listen up.
