Last week in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Charlotte, Austin Hill got a little heated and went after Cole Custer on the track. Hill intentionally kept his foot on the gas, wrecking Custer in the process.

Of course, it all started before that when the two drivers were racing hard for position. Neither was having the day they had hoped to have at Charlotte. Then, emotions got the best of Austin Hill.

As a result, NASCAR fined Hill $25,000 and deducted 25 points from him in the driver standings. He was the points leader prior to that penalty and now sits third.

RCR will not appeal the penalties, according to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports.

Austin Hill is a good driver. There is a reason why he was leading the points standings before this penalty. However, he has had a history of getting hot-headed and not taking accountability for his actions.

This is the right move from NASCAR. Cole Custer had already hit the outside wall in Turn 1 and 2 and then had to deal with Hill driving into the back of him until he spun off the track and into the inside wall.

It was an egregious move and something that should be taken seriously. NASCAR made the right decision here and it appears that RCR knows they can’t argue against it.

Austin Hill hoping to bounce back at Portland

A lot of attention is paid to how Austin Hill races on superspeedways. For good reason, too. Hill has done a lot of winning on the drafting tracks. But he needs to start getting respect for what he does on the road courses.

At Portland in the last two seasons, Hill has finishes of P3 and P5. He was P2 at COTA in 2022 and this season as well. In 2023 alone, he was P5 at the Chicago Street Course, P3 at Road America, P4 at Indy, and P9 at the Roval. He is a real threat to win this weekend.

I love this Xfinity Series race in Portland. I think it is one of the best races on the schedule for this series. If only we could see the Cup Series get up there and run a race or two, that would be great.

It is a fast track that is almost two miles in length. Last season the finish was one of the most exciting ends to a race the entire season, regardless of series. Austin Hill will be looking to get back to Victory Lane. Can he get it done on the road course?
