Ricky Pearsall update: Public defender argues shooting of 49ers WR was not attempted murder
The lawyer of the 17-year-old who is charged with the attempted murder of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall argued that his client did not try to murder him. Public defender Robert Dunlap said this during the 17-year-old’s second appearance in court on Tuesday.
“It was a rather extended struggle between Mr. Pearsall and my client,” Dunlap said describing the security footage, per The Athletic. “They were really fighting back and forth on the sidewalk. As you might imagine, Mr. Pearsall gets the best of it. He does kind of — I don’t know if you’ve ever wrestled or not — a nice hip toss and throws my client to the ground and ends up on top of him. …I think (the video) supports that this is an attempted robbery and not an attempted murder.”
Police said three shots were fired during the altercation. One hit Pearsall in the chest and exited out his back, according to Pearsall’s mother, Erin Pearsall. The bullet missed all of Ricky Pearsall’s vital organs, and he was released from the hospital less than 24 hours after the shooting.
The 17-year-old is also charged with second-degree robbery and assault with a semiautomatic weapon. He will remain in custody through at least his next hearing on Sept. 26.

Pearsall, 24, was selected by the 49ers No. 31 overall in this year’s NFL Draft after playing college football at Arizona State and Florida. On Sept. 2, Pearsall was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.
“I think [not rushing him back] is big,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said when asked when Pearsall will be back on the field. “Especially, I think, each day, the mental part becomes more of a big deal. The adrenaline and just surviving that. Ricky saying stuff, at first, that doesn’t matter like, ‘I still think I could play versus the Jets.’ Those are the things he’s talking about, and it’s just like, ‘Dude, what are you talking about? There’s other things.’
“But the adrenaline of all that. And then I think each day just to actually relive that and what his family had to go through for a couple hours, just flying out here, not totally knowing what the deal was going to be. I think that’s tough for him or anybody. When that adrenaline goes away, that becomes a much bigger deal. And that’s kind of what I mean by everyone kind of respecting that.”
