Robert Griffin III has scathing reaction to Dallas Cowboys hiring Brian Schottenheimer
Plenty of people were ripping into the Dallas Cowboys for the coaching moves they made on Friday night, including their hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach. Robert Griffin III was among those who thought it was a poor hire. And he let everybody know about it on his Twitter page. “The Dallas Cowboys aren’t serious about winning,” he tweeted.
More on Brian Schottenheimer becoming HC
On Friday, the Dallas Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach. The organization is giving Schottenheimer a four-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Schottenheimer will replace Mike McCarthy, who was the Cowboys’ head coach from 2020-24. The Cowboys officially parted ways with McCarthy on Jan. 13, after he failed to lead the team to the playoffs. During McCarthy’s four years at the helm of the organization, the Cowboys posted a 49-35 record and a 1-3 mark in the postseason.
Schottenheimer’s father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a head coach for four different NFL teams from 1984-2006. The Schottenheimers are the third family with active head coaches in the league, Mike and Kyle Shanahan and Bill and Brian Callahan. The Schottenheimers become the ninth father-son combination to serve as head coaches in the National Football League.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Cowboys interviewed Seahawks assistant Leslie Frazier, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Then, they finally settled on Schottenheimer. During his two years with Dallas, Mike McCarthy called the plays for the Cowboys.
Perhaps one of Schottenheimer’s most successful stints as a play-caller came with the Seattle Seahawks. In 2018, Seattle ranked 6th in scoring. In 2019, they ranked ninth in scoring. In 2020, they ranked 8th in scoring.
It’s important to note that he took over a team that already had a Super Bowl and a rising star at quarterback in Russell Wilson. The 2018 team resembled a run-heavy scheme from Schottenheimer, and it produced good results, something he’s shown an affinity for in the past. They ranked first in the National Football League in rushing yards per game.
