Robert Griffin III reveals ESPN still has not explained why he was laid off
Robert Griffin III still doesn’t know why ESPN let him go back in August and, at this point almost four months later, he doesn’t need to know anymore.
Griffin III discussed the end of his three-year run at the network while on “Pardon My Take’ on Friday. He began by clarifying that they laid him off rather than firing him as checks are still being cut for him based on his prior contract from The Worldwide Leader.
“Well, I first have to say I was not fired,” said Griffin III. “I was laid off and I am getting paid from ESPN while I’m off.”
As for their justification for it, Griffin III said he’s still unsure of what it is to this day. All he knows is that it wasn’t based on his work broadcasting live college games and appearing on shows like “Monday Night Countdown,” “Get Up,” and “First Take” from 2021 through August of 2024.
“So, the first reaction was why? Alright, so, you go through the process of why did this happen? Okay, let me look at performance. Alright, they’re saying it’s not performance-based…It’s like, okay, it’s not performance-based, they’re telling me it’s not performance-based,” Griffin III recalled. “Then what is it about? And I don’t know.”
However, while he still doesn’t know, Griffin III now doesn’t care at this point.
“I think it would be nice. I think everyone – you want to know,” Griffin III said. “When they tell you what it wasn’t? You’re like, oh, cool, sweet! But then it’s like, what was it? What was it? I didn’t get that answer. And, at this point, like, you know, we’re, shoot, what, four months past that? I’m not asking for the answer anymore. I don’t need it. I don’t need it anymore.”
With that, Griffin III is focusing elsewhere on his career moving forward in media. He’s still working on his own podcast and, beyond that, there are other things to come to actually worry about, as far as his work.

“What I can do is I can sit here and I can twiddle my thumbs for three, four months, five months and try to figure out, ‘Well, why did this happen?’. Or I can go just move on and have fun, enjoy the process,” Griffin III said. “We have the podcast – Out of Pocket with RGIII. My wife is a co-host on that. We’ve had some great conversations with people.”
“It was a tough one to navigate but it’s been a fun process for me. I’ve got some stuff in the works that’s going to be coming up here in the next couple of weeks and I’m blessed to be a part of those opportunities,” continued Griffin III. “I wasn’t just going to sit at the house and be mad about something. It’s, like, they decided to go in a certain direction. You just find a way to be the best version of yourself that you can be.”
Griffin III, the former winner of The Heisman Trophy and then veteran quarterback in the NFL, has taken space of his own in media in the 2020s. That’ll now continue for him wherever he finds himself from here on.
“You don’t just want to sit on your hands and feel sorry for yourself, you know…I’m open and excited about all of those opportunities,” said Griffin III. “It’s like you said. We’re thriving. We’re having a good time
