Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen has been sending mixed messages the past few days. And it looks like he’s going to end up leaving Tampa Bay for the Jacksonville Jaguars, after reversing course on Thursday night. Jacksonville would simply not take no for an answer. They even fired GM Trent Baalke in order to land Coen. Plenty of people in the national media have been recently pounding the table for the Cowboys to pull the same courtship with Deion Sanders. On Thursday evening, Robert Griffin III suggested Dallas should do whatever it takes to land the Colorado head coach as the head honcho of the Cowboys.

“The Jacksonville Jaguars are treating Liam Coen how the Dallas Cowboys should be treating Deion Sanders,” RGIII wrote on Thursday evening.

Sanders has led the Colorado Buffaloes to one of the bigger turnarounds in college football, playing an instrumental role in guiding the Buffs to a 9-4 overall record in the 2024-2025 campaign. In 2023, they had a 4-8 overall record. But Sanders’ name has been a hot commodity in NFL coaching circles this offseason, especially in Dallas. Jerry Jones has been flirting with Sanders as the Cowboys potential head coach.

Deion Sanders to the Cowboys chatter has quieted

The Dallas Cowboys remain one of the most intriguing NFL head coach openings. However, as time has gone on, one name that was interesting to many people, Deion Sanders, has quieted down in recent days.

ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter shared an update on the Dallas coaching search on Get Up Thursday morning. In it, he explained that the conversations about Sanders and Dallas have quieted because the Cowboys are focusing their search on other candidates, and that has been the recent focus.

“It has quieted,” Schefter said. “I think they have focused in on the other candidates that they want to get to know better. They want to get to know the ideas of what they think they would run things if they were the head coach.”

One thing that has made sense when it comes to hiring Sanders is that he has a longstanding relationship with team owner Jerry Jones. That goes back to when Sanders played for the Cowboys, and there is a clear mutual respect. Still, there has been a lot of noise about the chances he can end up in Dallas. Joel Klatt revealed that the conversations between the two sides have been extensive. On top of that, legendary coach Nick Saban has backed Sanders for the job.

“I think Jerry Jones knows Deion Sanders is always there. Deion never committed to taking the job or not taking the job. Jerry Jones never committed to — it was just a conversation.” Schefter said. “Obviously, everybody got carried away with it and we’ll see if that continues on, but right now it looks like they’re looking at these other candidates to decide whether or not to move forward with them.”

Sanders first got into coaching in the high school ranks within the state of Texas. Then, in 2020, he took over at Jackson State before making the move to FBS with Colorado in 2023. Over the course of his five college seasons, Sanders has a 40-18 record. At both of his colleges, he’s taken over programs that were in need of rebuilding.

Regardless, for the time being, the Dallas Cowboys are focusing on other potential head coaching candidates. That includes the recent report that Dallas will be entering a second interview with Brian Schottenheimer, who was already within the organization as the offensive coordinator.
