The ever-increasing popularity of NASCAR got a shot in the arm on Super Bowl Sunday when Ross Chastain starred in a Busch Light ad on the big day.

It was a brief ad, featuring two hikers going through the woods in Canada. In an effort not to get lost or end up heading in circles, the two hikers begin to, with the help of a narrator, look for recognizable landmarks.

The camera pans to Chastain’s No. 1 car, parked in the woods with a tent perched atop with Chastain inside. Out pops Chastain, battling the narration.

“What’s wrong with going in circles?” Ross Chastain says.

The ad was short but sweet. The filming was not, Chastain said. Joining The Teardown podcast ahead of the Daytona 500 this week, the driver broke down how exhaustive the process was for the commercial. Filming took a long time.

“All day. Yes, all day,” Ross Chastain said. “We flew in the night before, into Seattle. Then we drove up into Canada the next morning, about an hour and a half. That’s where Busch guy was already hanging out waiting on me. They filmed a lot of other things that day, but yeah we were there all day and we left late at almost sunset and headed back down and caught a red-eye out.”

The driver was clearly impressed by the level of detail that Busch Light and the ad agency put into the commercial.

“It’s thought out and intentional, every piece about it,” Chastain said. “Every piece of bark, the moss, the trees, the lighting. The way that they planned that out and their agencies work with Busch Light to do that is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. So yeah, there’s no accidents on their commercials. It’s all intentional. Yeah, I’m proud to be a part of it and I learned through the process.”

That’s not to say there weren’t some frustrations. Ross Chastain admitted there were a lot of re-shoots.

“A lot. I would say it and then they would say, ‘Perfect, again. Perfect, again,'” Chastain said. “I didn’t (complain) because they did have me alter the level I did it and the cadence I did it and the octave. So the one they used is actually higher than the one I would normally think.”

Any qualms aside about hearing his own voice on the commercial, Chastain noted the whole thing was pretty fun. On top of that, he got to see the Canadian countryside at a perfect time of the year.

“It was summertime when we filmed that, so it was still warm luckily,” Ross Chastain said. “Yeah it was beautiful. It was perfect weather. We caught a great day. I mean we had enough time at the end of the day to drink some beers, so that was the best thing. After were all done it was like, ‘finally.'”
