Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that while Russell Wilson is feeling better after experiencing calf tightness last week, Justin Fields is in line to start in Sunday’s Week 2 road matchup against the Denver Broncos.

“As we sit here today, we’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin added that Pittsburgh will continue to monitor Wilson in practice. If Fields does indeed get the start under center, that means there will be no revenge game for Wilson, whom the Broncos released in the offseason just two years into his five-year, $242.5 million deal.

Wilson, 35, first injured his calf on the eve of training camp. He did not throw a pass in the next 10 practices following the injury but was able to play in six offensive series over the last two preseason games. Wilson did enough during camp and the preseason to beat out Fields for the QB1 job.

Justin Fields leads Steelers to Week 1 win filling in for Russell Wilson

Fields led the Steelers to an 18-10 Week 1 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. He was efficient through the air, completing 17-of-23 passes for 156 yards. He added 57 yards on the ground. While the offense failed to punch it into the end zone, Chris Boswell went a perfect 6-for-6 on his field goal attempts.

“As I’ve gotten to know him, he is a real steady Eddie,” Tomlin said of Fields after the game. “He’s not overly talkative, but he’s got a steady, strong demeanor. Just being in stadium with some of the things that I’ve seen through team development were confirmed. It’s good to be able to communicate with a guy when things get thick, and you see clear eyes. He’s solid as a rock. His play and thus our play is kind of reflective of that.”
