Russell Wilson limited in practice due to ‘calf tightness’

Russell Wilson is dealing with an injury days before the start of the 2024 NFL season. Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was limited at practice on Thursday due to “calf tightness.”
Wilson was just named the Steelers starting quarterback, and the team is preparing for its opener against the Atlanta Falcons. He is no stranger to calf problems as he dealt with them during the start of training camp. Wilson’s injury led to Justin Fields seeing more action, leading to some believing he should be the starter over Wilson.
The Steelers signed Wilson in March after the Denver Broncos released him. The former Wisconsin Badgers star had a solid 2023 season with the Broncos, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 15 games. Wilson went 7-8 as a starter and was benched the final two games so the Broncos could “preserve financial flexibility.”
“Russ’ resume is a unique one in terms of length and success,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters after naming him the starter, per Steelers.com. “That tends to play a factor in the decision-making, but not from a decision-making perspective. It’s just the fruits of his labor. He’s seen and done a lot, and I think that was displayed in the way he played and conducted himself.”

Russell Wilson ready to have a ‘great season’ with Steelers
“I’m super excited to be here, obviously,” Wilson said. “I came here to help us win. That’s the focus. And I think the best part is how hard we’ve all worked every day from all the way from OTAs to Latrobe. And obviously, we’ve got a great season ahead of us, and we’re excited about it.”
The Seattle Seahawks selected Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He quickly became one of the top quarterbacks in the league as he was named to the Pro Bowl during his rookie season and led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win in 2013. During his time with the Seahawks, Wilson was selected to play in the Pro Bowl nine times and named to the All-Pro Second Team in 2019.
In March of 2022, Wilson was traded to the Broncos. A few months later, Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million contract extension with the team.
