It hasn’t been the dream season Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos imagined, and it’s taken another unfortunate turn.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the former Super Bowl champion quarterback will be held out of this weekend’s game against the New York Jets with a lingering injury.

“While Russell Wilson wanted to play despite a hamstring injury and did everything he could to play, the Broncos HC Nathaniel Hackett will hold back the 9-time Pro Bowl QB vs. the Jets to allow him to heal and prevent a lingering injury, per sources,” tweeted Schefter. “Brett Rypien gets the start.”

While the Broncos started 2-1 on the season, the vibe has been far from fun surrounding the Broncos. Wilson hasn’t been his usual self, amassing only 1,442 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions on the season thus far, and Denver has lost three straight.

Meanwhile, Rypien actually has history against the Jets, defeating them in the most action he’s seen in an NFL game during the 2020 season. In his career, the former Boise State star has passed for 295 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions when called upon.

While the Broncos are stumbling into Week 7, the Jets are flying high after victories over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers in recent weeks. Now, they’re catching Denver at the perfect time, looking to build upon an already promising season.

As for Denver, the hope is they can steal a victory with Rypien under center before they play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 8. Then, the Broncos will enter their bye week and look to have a stronger second half of the season.

Nevertheless, a lot is on the line for the Denver Broncos and New York Jets playoff-wise in a very competitive AFC, and it’ll be interesting to watch how the former responds without Russell Wilson on the field come Sunday.
