Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields: Adam Schefter reveals which way Steelers are leaning for Jets game
Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup quarterback Justin Fields has looked impressive during his time as the starter in the past few weeks. But there has been plenty of information swirling saying that the Steelers could potentially go back to Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback this weekend. On the Wednesday evening edition of NFL Live, ESPN’s Adam Schefter opened up on which way Pittsburgh is leaning in their quarterback situation.
Adam Schefter on Russell Wilson and Justin Fields
“Laura, Russell Wilson was taking some first team reps during practice today for the first time this season. And if you follow the breadcrumbs and you make sense of them. I think this is trending towards Russell Wilson starting on Sunday night against the New York Jets and Davante Adams,” Schefter began.
“And I say that because yesterday, Mike Tomlin himself opened up the idea and he’s considering starting Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson is taking some of the first team reps today. And I don’t think you say you’re considering somebody, you have them take first team reps. You’re doing all of that publicly and then you go back to the guy that’s been starting,” Schefter continued on NFL Live.

“Now I think Mike Tomlin probably wants to see how Russell makes it through the week physically, before he makes any declarations. He wants to make sure there are no setbacks with the calf injury. That was expected and did sideline him for four to six weeks. He wants to make sure that he feels physically well by the end of the week. But I think if all of those things happen, it surely sounds like Russell Wilson is trending toward starting Sunday night against the New York Jets if he can make it through this week unscathed,” Schefter finished.
Wilson has been injured for most of training camp and the 2024 campaign. And Justin Fields has looked pretty good. So, the decision to potentially turn back to Wilson has perplexed many analysts across the country. Fields has completed 66.3% of his passes for 1,106 yards, while tossing in five touchdowns with one interception. As a runner, Fields has 55 carries for 231 yards and five touchdowns.
The Steelers currently sit at 4-2 on the 2024 campaign.
