Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson told reporters on Sunday that he feels the Seahawks can be the number one offense in the NFL. While speaking about the additions to their offense, Wilson claimed “I think we can be the number one offense in football,” via Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

The number one offense in the NFL

Wilson has confidence that the current team composition around him and the new offensive game plan for Seattle will result in success. When speaking on his prediction of the being the number one offense in the NFL, Wilson wondered aloud, “I don’t see why not. We’re up for it, we’re ready, we were really good last year, had a lot of great things, but we can be even better.”

Wilson wasn’t just making his claim without a reason. He detailed exactly what he’s been seeing in the development of several Seahawks players. With talent around him that he believes in, Wilson is poised to lead an offense trying to improve.

“We’ve been watching the maturation of DK [Metcalf] and the continual growth of Tyler Lockett who has been one of the best receivers in football for the past several years,” stated Wilson. “Then adding Gerald [Everett], a true playmaker in the sense, and [Will] Dissly is feeling really confident right now. I’m really excited for his season, what he’s got in store. Colby [Parkinson] too as well, he’s had a really great training camp. You guys have seen him all over the field in practice and he’s doing a great job.”

Wilson’s praise seemed even higher for running back Chris Carson, entering his fifth year in the NFL.

“Our running backs, obviously Chris Carson, what he can do. I believe he’s the best in the game, so I think for us we need to find different ways of getting him the football,” Wilson pointed out.

New playcalling duties

One thing Wilson is excited about in his own development is a new offensive system that allows him the freedom to change plays at the line of scrimmage. The offense that the Seahawks are putting into place is one that allows Wilson to put the right guy in the right spot for success as he reads defenses. With Wilson’s experience, they’re hopeful that they can build the number one offense in the NFL.

“I’ve always been able to change the play for the most part,” he clarified. “I think the emphasis of being able to do it all the time, all throughout the game is the key. I think it’s a little bit different in that sense.”

The concerns he raised about doing this through an entire game is based on their 2020 struggles. Wilson and the Seahawks feel their offense was high-powered early in the season but fell behind as teams adjusted their defenses later in the year. Now their focus is on flexibility at the line of scrimmage and putting the decisions into Wilson’s hands.

“I think what we’re really focused on is my literally being on the line and doing that and calling it when we need to,” Wilson said. “Just playing fast.”
