Ryan Blaney furious with NASCAR for throwing red flag, helping Kyle Larson: 'Gave it to f***ing golden boy'
NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 went to overtime after Kyle Busch got turned around and hit the wall in the final five laps of the race, providing an interesting setup for the overtime restart as several different fuel strategies were at play.
The restart was tricky because the leader, Brad Keselowski, ran out of fuel just before the green flag. He had to dip out to pit road.
That left Ryan Blaney absolutely heated, because it meant that he was giving up track positioning to P3 Kyle Larson. Larson immediately slipped up the track into Keselowski’s spot and then overtook Blaney for P1 just before a red flag came out for a big wreck.
Blaney lost it on his NASCAR team radio.
“There’s no way they should’ve let that go green,” he said, according to Davey Segal of Sirius XM. “That’s ridiculous. They just GAVE it to him (Larson). It’s f*cking over, I’m on the top. I ain’t gonna win from the top. Gave it to f*cking golden boy. Son of a b*tch.”
His point was that Larson snatching key positioning as a result of a poor decision on Keselowski’s part, aided by NASCAR’s decision-making, will leave him in a tough position on the second overtime restart.

Larson will have the inside of the track in P1, while Blaney will have to fight him from the outside top lane in P2. Larson is one of the best drivers in the sport and excels in NASCAR situations like these.
Still, it’s hard to fault Keselowski for his decision, either. Had Busch not gotten into a wreck with Denny Hamlin just before the finish, the race might have finished under green and Keselowski very well may have just inched by on fuel.
There was quite the battle developing in the top three before the Busch caution came out, with Blaney doing a terrific job blocking Larson as the latter attempted to pass him on the final few laps.
In any case, there’s still an overtime restart to go, so it’ll be interesting to see how things play out and whether Blaney can cool down enough to make it a fight against Larson as the latest NASCAR event goes final.
