Ryan Clark and Marcus Spears had some interesting things to say about the Dallas Cowboys potentially hiring Bill Belichick as their next head coach. On ESPN Monday Night Countdown, Spears explained why he doesn’t think the Cowboys should hire the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach.

“Bill Belichick is arguably the greatest coach to ever coach football. Awesome. I think this team needs a coach that will take them into a long-term situation, where they can build together,” Spears said. “Think about the successful teams when we talk about DeMeco Ryans and Dan Campbell and Kyle Shanahan. These coaches have tenures that are expected to be five years, and we’re going to give you time to build a roster and put a team together.

“I think that’s where Dallas is. This is by no means disrespectful to Bill Belichick. This would be a hard environment for Bill Belichick in a way that he’s coached football and had so much control over what is being done football-wise. I hear people, and it’s exciting to talk about. I don’t think it’s the right move to make.”

Clark said that Belichick is not the right fit for the Cowboys in terms of the direction they are heading. “Marcus is right in the sense that this is a total rebuild,” Clark said. “That doesn’t mean you have to go out and think you’re going to be a team with a terrible losing record or who never competes to get into the wild card. But you have to understand now you have a quarterback that makes $60 million a year, you want to get him with a coach that he can help along understand the Dallas culture but also has an opportunity to grow.

“If Bill Belichick comes here, they going to want to win next year. This isn’t a roster that is built to win next year, a roster that’s going to receive so much pressure once you put him in the head coaching seat. To me, it’s about going out and not bringing in Mike McCarthy for a sleepover so we can wear matching pajamas and figure out how are we going to move forward.

“It’s about truly sitting down with these young, innovative, creative coaches that understand how to relate, not only from an X’s and O’s standpoint with today’s players, but a real-life standpoint with these players to where they are asked about you the first thing they say is, ‘I love my coach. I love the relationship he has with us as players, and we will play for him. But it is still about what we do in this locker room.'”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Belichick was recently in Dallas, but it wasn’t because of the Cowboys. But people still believe that Belichick will be the next head coach in Dallas if McCarthy can’t turn things around this year.
