Sam Cosmi injury update: Brutal diagnosis revealed for Washington Commanders OL
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Sunday that right guard Sam Cosmi suffered a torn ACL in Saturday’s 45-31 NFC Divisional Round victory over the Detroit Lions.
Cosmi will miss next weekend’s NFC Championship Game against the winner of Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, as well as Super Bowl LIX if the Commanders advance. He will likely miss part of the 2025 season given the expected 9–12-month time of recovery.
“That’s a big deal, the ballplayer and the man,” Quinn said, via JP Finlay of NBC4 Sports.
Cosmi, 25, injured his knee early in the second quarter after a Lions defender rolled into the back of his legs on the goal line. Cosmi’s leg bent backward, and he needed assistance coming off the field. Washington ruled out Cosmi for the remainder of the game during halftime.
Seventh-year pro Trent Scott replaced Cosmi at right guard and performed well in his absence. Now, Scott will have to do it in the most important game in Washington’s history since its Super Bowl XXVI win during the 1991 season.

Commanders lose Sam Cosmi for remainder of playoffs
Cosmi is the Commanders’ best offensive lineman, starting every game this season at right guard. The former right tackle allowed just one sack this season, earning a 68.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. Cosmi signed a four-year, $74 million extension with more than $45 million guaranteed with the Commanders before the season.
Washington’s offense has rolled with and without Cosmi this postseason. After narrowly advancing past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFC Wild Card Round, the Commanders had their way with the No. 1 seeded Lions. In nine possessions: five touchdowns, one field goal, one missed field goal, one failed fourth-down attempt and one punt. That came after they didn’t punt once against Tampa Bay.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 51 yards, continuing to build his case for the best rookie season in NFL history.
