Former North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell might have the Washington Commanders job already, according to Jahan Dotson.

Dotson, a former Penn State pass catcher, could be part of an exciting duo with Howell in 2023. He’s quite confident the young signal caller going into the fall

A former Heisman contender, Howell lit up in college and seems to have the QB1 job on lock.

“I think we got our quarterback situation settled,” Dotson said Tuesday on The Jim Rome Show. “I think Sam Howell’s gonna be our guy. I have complete faith in him. He’s a guy who, I always say this, he makes throws look super effortless on the field.”

Howell looks like the leader in the clubhouse ahead of veteran Jacoby Brissett and former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm.

Howell had limited action as a rookie. He went 11-of-19 passing (57.9%) for 169 touchdowns, one touchdown and one interception.

He threw his lone touchdown of the season against the Dallas Cowboys in the season finale during the 2022 campaign.

But he’s definitely ready to take the next step.

“He’s a great leader,” Dotson said regarding his QB. “He’s learning how to lead an NFL offense. He’s just learning the ropes just as we are, being in a new offense. I’m super excited for him. I can’t wait to get out there and just make plays for him and make his life and his job as easy as possible. I can’t wait for it.”

Howell being QB1 isn’t new news for the Commanders. Back in January, the organization informed potential offensive coordinators that Howell was the starting quarterback.

Dotson should help. As a rookie, he had 35 catches for 523 yards, seven touchdowns and 14.9 yards per catch.

In his college career, Howell was a stat machine. Although his passing statistics dipped after his freshman year, he was one of the best quarterbacks in program history.

He finished his collegiate career with 10,283 yards, 92 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 63.8% completion percentage.

As a member of the Class of 2019, Howell was a four-star recruit out of Monroe (N.C.) Sun Valley, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, the No. 6 quarterback in the class and the No. 91 overall prospect in the class.
