In overtime, Sam Mayer had the lead, but he wasn’t able to hold onto it as Kyle Larson went around on the outside. Mayer was on older tires and was involved in an incident earlier in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Texas. It didn’t help that Taylor Gray got into the back of the 41 car as well.

Sam Mayer is still looking for his first win with Haas Factory Team. It looked like he was about to pull off another late win at Texas. In the first overtime restart, Mayer looked strong. The second one was one too many.

After finishing P5, Mayer talked about the end of the race. He felt that he had a lot working against him.

“He had better tires, better aero, because we were in that crappy wreck on the front,” Mayer told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “So, I had everything against me and I still was able to at least be there and … I don’t want to say outperform because that sounds really, really bad, but be there and have a shot at it and put myself in position with that.

“So, we were just at a disadvantage all day because of the wreck on the front, and we came back almost going a lap down under green because of the damage. Put it back together and made it better, and we were there at the end. So, that’s all I can ask for.”

Despite not having a win on the year, Sam Mayer is third in points. He was able to close the gap a little bit on Justin Allgaier after the defending champion crashed out of the race early.

I think the lack of laps led this season is concerning. 53 laps out front through 12 starts, Mayer could be doing better. As this team comes together, Mayer will be someone to watch. He likes picking up those late season wins.

Truthfully, my criticisms are nitpicking. This has been a fantastic start to the season for Sam Mayer. In fact, it’s his best start ever in the Xfinity Series when you look at the number of top-10s, top-fives, and his points situation. No, he doesn’t have a win yet, but he isn’t going to be kept out of victory lane for long.

Two weeks off and then back at it in Charlotte for the Xfinity Series. Maybe that’swhere Mayer gets his first win of the season.
