Scottie Scheffler withdraws from 2025 PGA season opener after undergoing surgery for Christmas injury
Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 overall player in the world, has withdrawn from the 2025 PGA Tour season-opening tournament, The Sentry.
The Sentry takes place Jan. 2-5 at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Maui, Hawaii, but the field will no longer include Scheffler, who sustained a right-hand injury while preparing dinner on Christmas Day.
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Blake Smith, Scheffler’s manager, said in a statement. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”
Scheffler, 28, is coming off his best season to date on the PGA Tour. Scheffler won seven events, including capturing his second Green Jacket with a four-stroke victory over Ludvig Åberg in The Masters. He won the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake, beating Collin Morikawa by four strokes.
Scheffler earned a record $29,228,357 on Tour, a $25,000,000 bonus for claiming the FedExCup and an $8 million bonus for topping the Comcast Business top 10. Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods (2005-07) to win PGA Tour Player of the Year in three consecutive years.

“I never really played golf for legacy. That’s not something I think about day to day. I play because I love the competition,” Scheffler said after his victory in the Hero. “I like trying to get the most out of myself out here on the golf course. That’s why I’m always trying to improve, trying to do little things to get better he golf course.
“I don’t think about records, I don’t think about achievements, wins, losses, I just try and get the most out of myself and come out here and compete and have a good attitude.”
