Sean McDermott reacts to Damar Hamlin's first interception
Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott loved seeing Damar Hamlin get his first career interception in front of a national audience. During halftime of the Monday Night Football game between the Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, McDermott shared his reaction to Hamlin’s pick.
“That’s amazing. God is good and we give Him all the glory,” McDermott said to ESPN sideline reporter Laura Rutledge. “Damar’s been amazing. What a journey he’s been on.”
Hamlin is back as a starting safety for the Bills after recovering from cardiac arrest. The Pittsburgh Panthers alum suffered the medical emergency during a Monday Night Football game in January 2023 and saw limited action during the 2023 season later that year. Before the 2024 season kicked off, McDermott announced that Hamlin would start at safety.
“It’s one thing to come back off of an ACL or a broken bone. It’s another thing to come back off of what he came back off of,” McDermott said in September, per the Bills’ official website. “Let alone just to decide to play football, contact football in full pads at the NFL level. I don’t think I need to say anything more. It’s incredible.

“I think God’s hands have been on Damar and his family and will continue to be. We’re just extremely proud and full of gratitude to watch him go through what he’s went through and where he is now.”
The hard work Hamlin put in during the summer is paying off. During traininng camp, Bills safety Taylor Rapp talked about what has imprressed him the most about Hamlin.
“Damar, he’s one of the guys, too, one word I can say is ‘consistency,’” Rapp said, per Sports Illustrated. “He’s played at a really high level, dating back even to the spring in OTAs. Just to see his growth in this second week of camp, too, he’s grown a lot. He’s really playing at a high level, continued to play consistent. Developing a groove with him, really excited to see the rest of camp and how this plays out. Really, really proud of him.”
