The Los Angeles Rams have placed backup quarterback Stetson Bennett on the reserve/non-football illness list, head coach Sean McVay said earlier this week. However, the specifics behind the decision were not revealed.

While meeting with reporters, McVay said he wanted to keep details “in-house.” He does not plan to expand upon the Rams’ decision to make the move.

“Out of respect for him and the situation, I’m going to leave all of those specifics and particulars in-house. Want to be able to do that out of respect for that situation,” McVay said, per ESPN.

“I’m not going to really have any follow-up information or anything that I’ll give in that regard … That’s all I’m going to say, and I really hope that you can please respect my wishes in regards to keeping that in-house. I understand you have a job to do, but there are certain things that are a lot bigger and more important. Out of respect for the particulars and the specifics, I want to be able to keep it in-house and that’s where I’d like to leave it, please.”

Bennett was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Rams out of Georgia. He led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022 while in Athens.

Rams have Brett Rypien to backup Matthew Stafford

With Bennett off the active roster, the Rams will have Brett Rypien available to back up Stafford for this weekend’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“The fortunate thing for us is that Brett Rypien has been in-house,” McVay said. “He’s on our practice squad. He was the backup last week, and he’s going to continue to be in that situation until anything changes on that note.”

Rypien was not selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. But he did join the Denver Broncos that season, suiting up for the team from 2019-22. He joined the Rams ahead of the 2023 NFL season.

He has appeared in eight total games with three starts. Rypien has completed 80-of-130 passes for 778 yards and four touchdowns. The quarterback has proven to be turnover-prone, throwing eight interceptions.

Los Angeles posted an impressive Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, winning 30-13. Both the Niners and the Rams head into this weekend’s contest with 1-0 records. Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET. The game airs on FOX.
