The Seattle Seahawks have fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after only one season, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Grubb joined the organization after spending two seasons at Washington with current Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer.

The Seahawks’ decision came as a surprise to many fans. After all, the team averaged 332.2 yards of offense per game this season, ranking in the top half of the NFL. For reference, the Kansas City Chiefs averaged five fewer yards per game.

Although the Seahawks ultimately missed the NFL postseason, they finished with a 10-7 record and were second in the NFC West. With Grubb out in Seattle, many fans are speculating whether he will reunite with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Grubb and DeBoer’s time together wasn’t limited to Washington. The pair have been coaching together since Grubb came to Sioux Falls in 2007. Since then, Grubb has stuck by DeBoer’s side, serving as an offensive coordinator at Fresno State and Washington.

The duo received nationwide praise in their two seasons coaching the Huskies. In their first season at Washington, the pair revamped the program’s offense, finishing the 2022 campaign second in total offense and seventh in scoring.

DeBoer and Grubb only found more success in the 2023 season, leading the Huskies to their first appearance in the national championship. However, after DeBoer announced he would be leaving the program to take over at Alabama, Grubb went his own way, accepting an offer from the Seahawks.

Neither thrived without the other. Alabama finished 9-4, firmly placing DeBoer under pressure to succeed next season. As for Grubb, he’s now without a job. Back in February, Grubb explained his decision to initially move on from his partnership with DeBoer.

“Thought about that process a lot of times honestly so just in this situation (this time) made it tougher,” Grubb said, per The Tuscaloosa News. “He (DeBoer) was getting it started at Alabama and I wanted to be there for him but I knew this is what ultimately I wanted to do if the right situation came up.

“The timing is so difficult to describe so I think that was the hardest part. … We knew this day would come and I’m excited for Kalen, he’s going to do a phenomenal job down at Alabama… I had to trust the process and know that it would end up the right way.”

Perhaps the “right way” for Grubb was always to be right by DeBoer. Only time will tell where the veteran coordinator will land next.
