Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith had a breakout season in 2022, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. This season, he had a pretty substantial dip in production, but still put-up decent numbers. And on Thursday evening, it was revealed by Field Yates of ESPN that the Seahawks have decided to restructure his contract. They’re converting his $9.6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, which creates $4.8 million in cap space.

In the 2023-2024 campaign, Smith completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,624 yards, while tossing in 20 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. It was still the second-best season of his 10-year NFL career thus far. A big reason for the dip in production was he played in 15 games this year, as opposed to 17 in 2022.

He’ll return one of the more exciting groups of offensive weapons in the National Football League with receiver Tyler Lockett, receiver D.K. Metcalf, receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, running back Zach Charbonnet, and running back Kenneth Walker III.

Smith-Njigba’s numbers were a little bit underwhelming for his rookie season, but he still showed flashes of why the Seahawks drafted the former Ohio State star in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He hauled in a 29-yard touchdown catch against the Philadelphia Eagles in overtime to lift the Seahawks to a victory. It was without a doubt, one of the plays of the year for the former Buckeye and likely a sign of what’s to come in future.

Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf were once again dynamic targets for Geno Smith. The tandem has been one of the most dynamic receiver corps in the league and they’ll only get better as Jaxon Smith-Njigba progresses in his second year. Lockett hauled in 894 receiving yards and five touchdowns last year and Metcalf hauled in 1,114 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

It’s one heck of a trio of receivers at your disposal and it should only make Smith’s job easier in 2024.

The Seahawks finished 9-8 overall this season, which was third in the NFC West. They were just on the outside looking in, in terms of making the playoffs. So, while they didn’t have quite the year that many expected they still had a pretty good year, especially in the National Football League. They won three of their last four games down the stretch, including an impressive 20-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
