Seattle Seahawks claim ex-Notre Dame RB Tony Jones

Rashaad Penny will not step onto a football field again this season, with the Seattle running back going down with a season-ending ankle injury. With one of their top offensive players done for the year, the Seahawks had to find a replacement through the waiver wire. In the end, they wound up picking up Tony Jones.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Seattle claimed Jones off waivers on Monday. He last played for the New Orleans Saints and played his college football at Notre Dame. Jones will now be moving up to the Pacific Northwest in hopes of contributing to the Seahawks moving forward.

“With Rashaad Penny having suffered a season-ending ankle injury, the Seahawks claimed former Saints’ RB Tony Jones on waivers today, per source,” Schefter said.

Jones left Notre Dame after the 2019 season but went undrafted during the 2020 NFL Draft. He was picked up by the Saints, singing with the practice squad after failing to make the final roster cut. However, he was elevated to the active roster in Week 17 against Carolina.

In 14 career NFL games, Jones has rushed for 163 yards on 59 carries but has not been able to get into the endzone quite yet. Seattle will present him a new opportunity after Penny went down with his injury.

The Seahawks already have one of the worst rush attacks in the NFL, ranking No. 32 yards gained through five games.

As for his college career, Jones really broke out as a senior, having a career-high in all of the major categories. Jones rushed for 857 yards and six touchdowns on 144 carries. He finished as Notre Dame’s leading rusher on the year as the Fighting Irish finished with an 11-2 record.
