Seahawks troll Lions over Blue Ski mask comments following OT win
Detroit Lions safety CJ Gardner-Johnson joined the team this offseason and wanted to shift the culture, and a part of that was encouraging fans to wear blue ski masks for their home opener on Sunday versus the Seattle Seahawks.
Gardner-Johnson’s idea sounded like a good one, but one that unfortunately came back to haunt himself and the Lions as they fell in overtime to the Seahawks 37-31.
The Seahawks must have heard about Gardner-Johnson’s plan to populate the stands with blue ski masks and brought some of their own. Seahawks safety Jerrick Reed sure did, as he was seen live on his Instagram after the game wearing a blue ski mask and celebrating with his teammates in a hilarious trolling job that can be seen below.
The Lions signed Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $8 million contract this offseason after he spent three seasons with the New Orleans Saints and one with the Philadelphia Eagles. He tied for the league lead in interceptions last season as a part of an Eagles team that made it all the way to Super Bowl LVII and now strives to bring that same championship DNA to Detroit.
The Lions franchise doesn’t have the strongest history when it comes to wins and losses in the NFL as one of four teams that haven’t made a Super Bowl appearance ever. But Garnder-Johnson wanted to replace the paper bags that have frequented the heads of Lions’ fans with blue ski masks as a symbol of a brighter future in the Motor City.

“From what I’ve seen, we got probably the most ruthless fans in the game,” Gardner-Johnson said. “From talking crap, they feed off of us. They yelled the loudest (last week), and that was a home game for KC. … You’re gonna see on Sunday. Blue ski masks everywhere.”
“What Coach Brad [Holmes] say, we villains, right? It’s part of us, it’s just the culture, I’m changing it. No paper bags. Ski masks, we taking what’s ours.”
Gardner-Johnson’s comments followed the Lions’ impressive Week 1 win on the road versus the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, and clearly struck a nerve with the team’s fanbase as several fans at Ford Field wore their blue ski masks, answering Gardner-Johnson’s call to action.
But unfortunately for Detroit, so did Seattle, as they handed the Lions their first loss of the season stealing a win late on the road.
