At the age of 19, Sebastian Montoya continues to follow in his father’s footsteps. The driver will compete in Formula 2 in 2025. Prema Racing is promoting the son of Juan Pablo Montoya to their F2 roster.

In the 2024 Formula 3 season, Sebastian Montoya competed for Campos Racing. He had a season-best finish of P2 at Spa. Despite only finishing 17th on the season, Montoya is getting the call-up.

This is a big deal for Montoya. Juan Pablo Montoya competed in Formula 1 for a number of years. He also had stints in IndyCar and Champ Car, as well as NASCAR.

Sebastian is part of the Red Bull Junior Team. This is a full-circle moment with the driver returning to Prema where he made his open-seat debut in 2020.

“I’m very excited to join PREMA for the 2025 FIA Formula 2 season. It was the first team I worked with and that makes it very cool to see how the team changed,” Montoya said about rejoining Prema. “It is one of the best teams in feeder series racing and now in the world. I’m delighted to join forces with it again and cannot wait to get it started.”

Racing is a family sport. It isn’t surprising to see Juan Pablo Montoya’s son climb through the ranks. The F1 ladder is a tough one to get through. Racing in F2 will be a big step up from F3. For a 19-year-old who will turn 20 during the season, there is a lot of room for growth and for failure.

Juan Pablo Montoya is still racing

Speaking of Juan Pablo, the iconic driver is still racing. He competed in the NASCAR Cup Series with 23XI Racing at Watkins Glen. It was a fun race that saw Montoya racing in the top half of the field and even in the top-10 at one point.

Montoya has done almost everything there is to do in major motorsports. He has won races in F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and IMSA. In 2021, Montoya even added a Le Mans 24 Hours class championship to his record.

Sebastian Montoya is a Formula driver like his father was at his age. Could we see him venture to the United States in the future and try out IndyCar or NASCAR in the future? I’d never say never, especially at 19.

Juan Pablo Montoya must be a proud father. His son continues to move up the ladder and is backed by a major team in Red Bull. It will be fun to see him develop in F2 next year.
