Sha'Carri Richardson notches stunning come-from-behind victory to win world title
United States sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson ran the 100-meter dash in 10.65 seconds to win the gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The former LSU standout outlasted Jamaican stars Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson to claim the gold medal, which is the first world title in her career.
The United States claimed both 100 meter victories in Budapest with Noah Lyles winning the men’s race Sunday.
The 23-year-old Richardson is tied with Jackson for the fastest time run by a woman this year at 10.65 seconds. Her 10.65-second run also set the record for fastest run at the World Athletics Championships.
Fraser-Pryce, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 100 meters, was the defending world champion.
Two other Americans ran in the 100 meter finals: Brittany Brown and Tamari Davis. Brown finished in seventh place and Davis finished in ninth place.
Richardson did not qualify for the world championships last year.
The star first rose to national prominence when she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as the United States’ top sprinter. However, she was suspended for one month after testing positive for marijuana and missed the Olympics as a result.
She had been a favorite for the Olympics prior to her suspension, and her victory in Budapest puts her one track to be a favorite one year from now in Paris.

In addition to Richardson and Lyles winning the 100 meters, Grant Holloway won the 110 meter hurdles. The 25-year-old hurdler has won the last three gold medals in the event at the World Athletics Championships. However, he won the silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo.
“I’m speechless right now,” Holloway said, via Reuters. “Nothing feels like the first one, but this one I’m definitely going to cherish in my heart.”
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser won his second first place prize in the shot put at the World Athletics Championships with a championship-record performance.
The United States also won the mixed 4×400 meters relay with Matthew Boling, Rosey Effiong, Alexis Holmes and Justin Robinson running in the final race.
The 2023 World Athletics Championships continues in Hungary for the rest of the week at the National Athletics Centre.
