QB Spencer Rattler fell to New Orleans in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Still, with the 150th selection, the Saints might have found some real value based on the opinion of him from Shane Beamer.

Beamer, Rattler’s head coach at South Carolina and an offensive assistant for him at Oklahoma, spoke highly of his former player again in an interview on the NOF Network after the draft. For as good of a prospect as he sees him as, he also thinks the franchise got just as great of a person to join their organization.

“I think they’re getting a guy with a huge upside,” said Beamer. “Fantastic person, somebody that obviously, you know, I’ve been around since 2019 when we were together at Oklahoma.”

Beamer also says that New Orleans is getting someone who has overcome a lot in his collegiate career. From a high-profile benching to other normal struggles for a college player, he has seen Rattler get through a lot to where he is today as a pro now.

“I think he has just been through so much adversity,” Beamer said. “His story? He has weathered some storms from what happened at Oklahoma, some of the adversity he felt he dealt with here at South Carolina with injuries and whatnot.”

Rattler played for five seasons for the Sooners in Norman and the Gamecocks in Columbia. He threw for over 10,800 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions on a 68.5% completion rate.

However, Rattler went from being the former No. 1 QB recruit in the country to a college player that didn’t fully meet expectations of him. The Sooners benched him for Caleb Williams in 2021 during a season where he was supposed to be in the running for The Heisman Trophy. That’s not to mention character questions about him that could have affected him in the draft process, which Beamer also discredited.

Rattler is now a prospect within the Saints’ building that, even after all that, will be getting his chance in the NFL. With that, New Orleans will be be getting a high-quality player and person according to Beamer.

“He’s extremely talented, he’s extremely hard-working. He’s humble,” said Beamer.

“I know he’s eager to get to work out there,” Beamer said.

Beamer downplays concerns about Rattler from Netflix show

Shane Beamer believes that people shouldn’t judge Spencer Rattler based on his actions on Netflix.

While speaking to the NOF Network, Beamer talked about the former Gamecock quarterback taking heat for appearing on QB1: Beyond the Lights.

“The Netflix show that he did, which I’ve never watched in my life, but I’ve heard about this Netflix show that didn’t portray him in a good light,” Beamer said. “I can’t imagine many people at the age of 17 would be proud of a Netflix show that was done on them.

“When you’re part of a reality show like that, the producers can twist and shape the narrative however they want to make some people look a certain way. I’ve never watched it. All I knew was what I saw with my own eyes, and I saw the way that people respected him and liked him in the football facility at Oklahoma.”
