In the coming weeks, Shane van Gisbergen is preparing to come to America. He’s got his visa and his Supercars season is over in Australia. So, SVG is coming stateside. The three-time champion in the V8 racing series and NASCAR Cup Series winner is starting his next journey.

Following his win at Chicago this summer, Shane van Gisbergen didn’t have trouble earning his visa for “extraordinary abilities.” It is a visa that athletes and people with exceptional talents are able to acquire to move to the United States permanently.

Speaking with SpeedCafe, SVG opened up about his plans for the big move.

“We leave in two and a half weeks,” van Gisbergen said. His partner, Jess Dane is also coming along.

“We’ll go to America and settle in, and then head to England with Jess’ family, and then back into it to start learning, I guess.

“It’s crazy. Even setting everything up with a social security number, bank account, visa, all that stuff… and it always seems like you can’t get one thing without having the other, and vice versa.

“It’s quite a process, but [Scott McLaughlin] has been a great help, as has Chris Wilson, who moved over to work for Penske. I’ve had a lot of people giving me the right advice. I’ve spoken to Scotty a lot, although he has an advantage because his wife is American, which makes it easier. But it’s just the hoops you’ve got to jump through.”

A very busy schedule awaits Shane van Gisberen in 2024.

Shane van Gisbergen wants to go full-time Cup racing soon

The ultimate goal in moving to the United States for SVG, making the Cup Series full-time. We know that he’s good for the handful of road course races every season. However, we have to see how he develops on the ovals.

He has some dirt racing experience on ovals, I believe. He isn’t just an asphalt driver. So, there might not be that much for him to learn. You don’t win three Supercars titles as a one-dimensional driver.

However, Shane van Gisbergen is going to take a year or so to get up to speed. Next year you can expect SVG to race throughout the NASCAR national series, in late models – hell I wouldn’t be shocked if he raced an ARCA event.

The plan is to go full-time Cup racing in 2025. That’s going to happen either with Trackhouse Racing. However, they have four drivers in Ross Chastain, Daniel Suárez, Zane Smith, and SVG – only two cars.

Smith is driving for Spire this season. However, 2025 is the year decisions have to be made. Unless Trackhouse acquires two new charters, or the charter system is done away with, they can’t field all four drivers in 2025 and beyond.

I expect Shane van Gisbergen to remain in the house, with Trackhouse. They are the international organization, the team of the future, and SVG fits perfectly with them.
