A big win today in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Shane van Gisbergen, but not one he didn’t have to earn the hard way. SVG’s cool suit failed, and on a hot day in Chicago, the driver had to go to the care center after the finish to get checked out.

UPDATE: Shane van Gisbergen was released from the care center just before 8 pm CT and “should be good to go” for Sunday’s Cup Series race, per Jeff Gluck of The Athletic.

It is not unusual for drivers to need a quick visit to the care center during these hot races. Unfortunately, it is also not unusual for these cool suits to fail. It seems that they fail about half the time and the result is having hot water all around your body during a race.

Gluck reported that Shane van Gisbergen went to the care center after becoming overheated. The Trackhouse Racing driver was able to complete his post-race interview on TV before heading off to the care center.

Shane van Gisbergen had to fight with Connor Zilisch to get the win today. It was a great battle and a physical one. Zilisch didn’t expect it to get so physical but that’s what happens in big-time auto racing, folks. SVG learned the hard way when he first got to NASCAR.

Hopefully, this is nothing but a precaution. SVG was great today in the Xfinity Series race on the streets of Chicago. He was also complimentary of Zilisch afterward.

Shane van Gisbergen praises Connor Zilisch after Chicago

An epic battle between Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch played out at the end of the Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race. SVG has clearly learned the ins and outs of NASCAR in his short time in America.

Shane van Gisbergen put his door on Connor Zilisch going into Turn 1 on the final restart, two laps to go in the race. It was a bold move that paid off. Zilisch hit the wall on exit, and SVG was able to speed off and avoid retaliation.

The two drivers are Trackhouse Racing teammates and today, JR Motorsports teammates. But on the final restart of a race as important as the Chicago Street Race, the gloves are off. Still, after the finish, SVG was highly complimentary of Zilisch.

“Yeah, he’s a great young driver and first time I’ve really raced him, and I knew that was my opportunity and took it,” van Gisbergen said of Zilisch. “Yeah, it was awesome one-two for the team.”

Right now, Shane van Gisbergen is on a roll. He has two pole awards and a win this weekend. One more race this weekend to complete the sweep. One more step to go.
