Sterling Sharpe was officially announced at the NFL Honors in New Orleans on Thursday as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025.

But before that was made known to the masses, Sterling Sharpe found out via his brother — Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. The former Green Bay Packers receiver arrived at his home to find his brother in his basement. Shannon Sharpe, wearing his Gold Jacket, revealed the news in a heartwarming moment for the Hall of Fame duo.

“This is something, man. Oh, wow. I need a seat — and a drink,” Sterling Sharpe said. “Shan, this is crazy.”

Sterling Sharpe had to wait a while after a neck injury forced him into retirement in 1994. His career only lasted seven years. But it was as productive a seven-year stretch as the NFL has seen from a receiver. Sterling Sharpe finished his career with 595 receptions, 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns. He won the receiving triple crown in 1992 and led the league in catches in ’89, ’92, ’93, touchdowns in ’92 and ’94 and yards in ’92.

Joining him in the Class of 2025 are four-time All-Pro edge rusher Jared Allen, six-time Pro Bowl safety Eric Allen and Antonio Gates, the NFL’s all-time touchdowns leader for a tight end (116).

Sterling Sharpe finally takes his place in Pro Football Hall of Fame

Sterling Sharpe was caught off guard by the news, while Shannon Sharpe was emotional giving it. When the latter was inducted in 2011, he famously said he was the only Hall of Famer to be the second-best football player in his own family.

Shannon Sharpe accomplished a lot in his career, notably winning three Super Bowls. But nothing compares to this moment — the chance to finally call his big brother a Hall of Famer.

“All those nights in that home, all those prayers. … So many people prayed that we didn’t even know God was listening to,” Shannon Sharpe said. “To have this moment, and I’ve had some great moments in my professional life. But this is the proudest moment in my life.”
