The 2025 college football season is still months away, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still plenty to get excited about. That includes a very interesting non-conference matchup between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Already, the folks at FanDuel have already released an early point spread for that 2025 matchup. South Carolina is currently a 9.5-point favorite for the game. The moneyline is set at -335 for the Gamecocks and +265 for the Hokies. On top of that, the over-under line is currently set at 46.5 points for this non-conference matchup.

The game is scheduled to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the Sunday of Week 1. That makes it a neutral site matchup to go along with being a non-conference matchup, with the Gamecocks obviously being a little closer to that site geographically. That game will also come the day after a different college game is played on that field on the same weekend a game will be played there on Saturday.

Despite this being a non-conference matchup, South Carolina and Virginia Tech have a decently extensive history. The two have met 20 times before with the Gamecocks holding an all-time series lead at 11-7-2. However, the two sides haven’t met since 1991. That was when the Gamecocks left being an Independent for the SEC. Back then, both had been Independent, and while both have been in the ACC they haven’t been at the same time.

South Carolina is coming off a season where the Gamecocks entered with relatively low expectations but quickly exceeded that, winning nine games. That helped them to get to the edge of the College Football Playoff, but they instead needed to settle for a trip to the Citrus Bowl.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is coming off a 6-7 season where the Hokies went to the Mayo Bowl. However, they weren’t able to come away with a win in that game, which did keep head coach Brent Pry from getting a mayo shower but also led to finishing the season with a losing record. That came as part of a frustrating second half of the season where the Hokies lost four of their final five games.

One major storyline is undoubtedly going to focus on Shane Beamer. The South Carolina head coach is the son of Frank Beamer, a legendary head coach at Virginia Tech. He also spent time there as an assistant coach.

For now, South Carolina is a two-score favorite in this game. At the same time, there is plenty of time for that to change with another Transfer Portal window, spring practice, and the entire summer to go before Week 1 comes around.
