After purchasing race trucks formerly of GMS Racing, Spencer Boyd and Chris Miller have formed Freedom Racing Enterprises. The new team will, of course, compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. They will take on the full season in 2024.

Spencer Boyd will drive the No. 76 Chevy Silverado. Boyd has a single win in the Truck Series, a checkered flag in 2019 at Talladega. Jeff Hammond, former crew chief for Darrell Waltrip will be the general manager of the team.

Greg Ely gets the nod as crew chief. Meanwhile, Rick Bourgeois will be Boyd’s car chief. Another brand new team in the Truck Series to go along with Faction 46.

A big step for Boyd and this ownership group.

Since 2019, Spencer Boyd has driven for Young’s Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series. He has limited starts in the Cup Series as well as a full season of Xfinity Series experience. Boyd has a single top-20 finish in the 2023 season.

Freedom Racing Enterprises will have full sponsorship announced at a later date for the 2024 season. For now, they have announced Miller’s company, Freedom Warranty will be on board.

Spencer Boyd ‘proud’ of new NASCAR team

In a press release, Spencer Boyd detailed what this all means for him as a driver and now, an owner. Taking on the responsibility of owning a team is huge. At just 28 years old, Boyd is now fully in the drivers seat, so to speak.

All of the emotions, all of the new feelings – it has been years in the making.

“This is a wildly proud moment for me,” Boyd said, via NASCAR.com. “If you asked a wide-eyed 20-year-old me at Martinsville Speedway if I was going to start my own NASCAR team in the next decade, I might have laughed it off. I have been blessed to be able to race cars for a living and remain part of the NASCAR family for as long as I have. I wouldn’t be here without a small group of very important people to my career, so I definitely want to thank them for believing in me through thick and thin. They know who they are and hope they are sharing in this feeling of pride.”

How about the Craftsman Truck Series lately? Kyle Busch Motorsports gets absorbed into Spire and GMS Racing ends its historic run – but you get the Petty Family back in the Truck Series with Thad Moffitt Faction 46. And Freedom Racing Enterprises with Spencer Boyd.

I’d call that growth. Best of luck to FRE in the 2024 season.
