New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler threw his first NFL touchdown pass in Sunday’s preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans.

Rattler, who relieved Jake Haener in the second quarter, connected with wideout Equanimeous St. Brown for a 21-yard score. Rattler dropped it in a bucket perfectly for St. Brown, threading the needle between two Titans defenders.

The former South Carolina standout went 2-for-4 for 34 yards on the nine-play, 70-yard scoring drive, the best offensive drive of his preseason to this point.

Spencer Rattler takes step forward in backup QB competition

Rattler, the Saints’ fifth-round selection, is competing with Haener to be the backup to Derek Carr. Both Haener and Rattler had solid outings in the first preseason game but struggled mightily in their second showing. To this point, nothing has separated one from the other, though Rattler is making a strong case versus Tennessee. As opposed to Rattler, who commanded the offense well, Haener went just 3-of-7 for 23 yards in his one quarter of action.

“I think he’s improving every day,” head coach Dennis Allen said earlier this month of Rattler. “There’s still some things that he’s doing – just understanding how to play within the scheme of the offense, how to get through your progressions, knowing how to listen to your feet, when to take your chances down the field, when it’s time to check the ball down – all those things are pretty good learning experiences.

“I wanted to put him in a situation, fourth-and-5, we’re in a move-the-ball situation see if he could execute and make a play. And he did, he made a hell of a throw on the out route to get the first down in that situation. So, I see some of that confidence, which I think is good at the quarterback position, and yet there’s some times where I think we’ve got to pull the reins back just a little bit.”
