Sprint Car bursts into flames after wreck, driver still behind the wheel in dramatic rescue video

A Sprint Car driver managed to escape without serious injury after his car caught on fire following a wreck at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday.

Chase Randall ran into Dusty Zomer in Turn 4 of the oval dirt track, his car rolling multiple times before landing on its wheels. The collision and subsequent roll caused the fuel cell to rupture, resulting in the car to become engulfed in flames. Fortunately for Randall, he was able to get out of the car just in time, rolling away on the ground as the safety crew came to his aid.

Randall escaped with just a slight burn around his chin, track officials told KCCI 8 in Des Moines. He said he expects to be ready to go again Tuesday with a new build.

Sprint Car driver OK after a scary crash at Knoxville Raceway

“Hey everyone. As most have seen or heard I was involved in a pretty scary wreck last night,” Randall said, via 7NEWS. “I first want to thank the Knoxville Raceway fire crew for doing an outstanding job getting to me quickly. All of my Simpson Race Products safety equipment performed just like it should to keep me as safe as possible in that situation. I used Inferno Armor last night for the first time and I am so thankful I did. It worked exactly as intended and gave the track crew time to get to me and me not feel any heat from the fire at all.

“I have a little burn spot on my chin from the flash that came up through the cockpit but other than that I have no burns, scratches, or anything on my entire body. I am doing okay this morning. Taking some much-needed rest today so I can be ready to go again on Tuesday. That was one of the scariest moments I have had in my racing career so far. I hope people can see the things that helped my situation to make sure everyone is as safe as possible each time they hit the track because you never know when it will happen.”

Randall, 19, currently sits fourth in the 410 Class points standings. Randall won the 360 track championship in 2023.
