Stan Savran, the legendary Pittsburgh sports broadcaster, passed away Monday. He was 76.

Born in Cleveland, Savran made his way to Pittsburgh in 1976. He became known for his work on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh, where he hosted “Savran on Sportsbeat” for 17 years. In addition, he worked with the Steelers and hosted pre and post-game shows for the Penguins and Pirates, per CBS News Pittsburgh. He received induction into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Savran was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2022.

Rich Walsh of KDKA-TV called Savran the “Godfather of Pittsburgh sports.”

“Stan Savran was a legend,” Walsh wrote on Twitter. “A true professional but more importantly a great person. Stan was a mentor and a good friend. I’ll miss him dearly. R.I.P to The Godfather of Pittsburgh sports.”

Steelers president Art Rooney II penned a tribute which the Steelers posted to their official Twitter account.

“Today is a sad day in the City of Pittsburgh as we lost a legendary person, media icon, and close friend with the passing of Stan Savran,” Rooney said. “He was a gentleman in every way possible, and he did so much for our city and Western Pa. with his honest candor and knowledge of all sports, both locally and nationally. Stan was involved for many years working on our Steelers Radio Network as well as doing several Steelers’ interviews and shows, while also being a valuable contributor to our Hall of Honor committee.
