Report: Steelers among multiple NFL teams with interest in trading for Matthew Stafford

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford may be on the move from Los Angeles, and the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a viable destination for the veteran signal-caller.
Rumors have swirled regarding Stafford’s availability since the Rams fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round. He’s looking for a raise, and a competitive team to finish out his career on. The idea was substantiated when Los Angeles gave him permission to seek a potential trade last week.
The New York Giants have been circling the idea, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes the Steelers are in the mix, as well. During Tuesday’s edition of Get Up on ESPN, the NFL insider elaborated on whether Pittsburgh would be a fit for the 37-year old quarterback.
“These teams are trying to find out Matthew Stafford’s availability in real time. Is he available? What kind of money would it take? The Pittsburgh Steelers, I’m told, have a level of interest. New York Giants, level of interest. There will be and are others,” Fowler explained, regarding the 2009 first overall pick. “But I’m told Matthew Stafford wants to remain in LA. He just needs to feel the love. He needs to feel appreciated. Due $27 million in base pay this year, that needs to go up a lot.
“I’m told the Rams recognize this and know this, but they have a teetering point. I don’t sense that the team’s willing to pay him some mega, $50 million plus a year deal. So, they’re going to have to find a sweet spot. If they can’t, Stafford will be forced to look at all options.”

It’s easy to see why teams would be interested in Stafford, as he threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, all while the Rams rattled off a run to the postseason. It was strong follow-up for the former No. 1 overall pick after he made his second career Pro Bowl in 2023.
Remaining with the Rams would certainly make the most sense for all parties involved. Stafford has been a revelation with Sean McVay, but Los Angeles doesn’t seem willing to pay through the nose for the veteran. If they do trade Stafford, many have theorized Aaron Rodgers could step in and play for the Rams.
All told, Matthew Stafford is still one of the top quarterbacks in the league, and teams are going to come calling if he’s available. Whether it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants are simply staying in Los Angeles, whichever team employs his services in 2025 will have a chance to make some noise.
