The NFL announced Monday it has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton for the first eight games of the 2024 season for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Sutton, 29, turned himself into Hillsborough County (FL) authorities in March after a warrant was issued for his arrest for an alleged assault. He was charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery and released from jail. The NFL investigated the incident and determined Sutton violated its policy. Sutton is eligible for reinstatement on October 29 following Pittsburgh’s Week 8 home contest against the New York Giants.

He started all 17 games for the Detroit Lions this past season, tallying a career-high 65 tackles (50 solo), four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes defended. Sutton spent the previous six seasons with the Steelers, who selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.

He appeared in 84 games (39 starts) for Pittsburgh. Sutton compiled 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 38 passes defended. Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed with the Lions last offseason. The Steelers re-signed Sutton in early June following his release from the Lions.

“It’s amazing being back,” Sutton said last month. “Came into a great foundation in this organization, it’s still the same way to this day. The people, obviously the players, the continuity, being back around this atmosphere is very heartfelt and lighthearted, a lighthearted situation. I’m just here to be myself, getting on the field around the guys and help this team any way I can.”

Sutton spoke of the incident, saying “everybody goes through adversity.”

“I’m never worried about a narrative. I’m never worried about what necessarily people say because obviously more than likely they don’t know me more than anybody else. You know what I mean?” Sutton said. “And again, it gets back to just your foundation, your morals. Who you are individually as a human being and just what you stand on. Holding my head high.

“Again, everybody goes through adversity, everybody goes through things in their life that can change in both directions. So, it’s all about how you stand on that and what you do from that. And like I said, I’m ready to keep moving in the right direction. Everything else will keep falling in line and we just keep moving from there.”
