Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan gave the latest update on the team’s quarterback situation with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Khan said he has had conversations with reps for Wilson and Fields about a return to Pittsburgh, and both players are open to it.

Khan also said that he’s keeping his options open since Wilson and Fields are set to be free agents. “Ideally, I think you like to sign one of the guys that we had last year,” Khan said Tuesday at the NFL combine, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “But the reality is, they’re both free agents. So, until we get one of those guys under contract, all options are on the table.”

Whoever the Steelers sign at quarterback will impact the type of players they bring in via free agency, particularly wide receivers. Pittsburgh is expected to bring in a top wide receiver to pair with George Pickens.

“It impacts who you sign, impacts the type of receivers you may go after, how you build the rest of the team,” Khan said. “All that has an effect. We want to put whoever the quarterback is in the best position to succeed. For us to add pieces, that’s the first part of this.”

Looking at Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ 2024 stats

Russell Wilson and Justin Fields signed with the Steelers last year and both did some good things on the field. Fields started the first six regular season games of the season and posted a 4-2 record. Wilson started the last 11 games and notched a 6-5 record. In 11 games, Wilson completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Fields played in a total of 10 games and completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards five touchdowns and one pick.

If the Steelers don’t sign Wilson or Fields, who do they go after? It was reported that the Steelers have shown interest in Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford who has been given permission from the Rams to talk to other teams. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said the Steelers have not talked to Stafford and likely would not pay his salary anyway.

Ultimately, the Steelers need a QB that can get the offense going. The lack of offensive production in the last part of the season is one of the reasons why the Steelers lost their final five games after a 10-3 start.
