Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields has signed with the New York Jets, according to Adam Schefter. This comes after he spent one season with the Steelers, largely as the backup.

In his report, Schefter revealed the contract details for Fields. He is getting a two-year, $40 million deal that includes $30 million guaranteed from New York. It was negotiated by David Mulugheta.

The Jets now become the third team that Justin Fields has played for in as many seasons and are the third team of his NFL career. He had initially been drafted by the Chicago Bears as a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’d spend three seasons there before being traded to Pittsburgh. There, he competed with veteran Russell Wilson for the starting job. Ultimately, the job went to Wilson, but Fields did step in for him when he battled injury.

In 10 games and six starts last season, Fields completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns to go with one interception. He also had 289 rushing yards and five more touchdowns on the ground.

Justin Fields takes over for a New York Jets team hitting the reset button. After bringing in Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2023 season, there was excitement about the quarterback position for the Jets. However, an Achilles injury in 2023 and subpar results in 2024 led to a disappointing 5-12 finish. At the end of the season, the Jets decided to part ways with Rodgers.

Ironically, Aaron Rodgers himself is on his way to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There, he will take over for Justin Fields and Russell Wilson in 2025. Notably, the Steelers were reportedly waiting on Fields to make his decision in free agency. Prior to that, they had been having conversations with the veteran Rodgers.

As for Justin Fields, he has now been reunited with Garrett Wilson. The young star wide receiver played alongside Fields when the two were both at Ohio State. There is hope that the two will quickly be able to rekindle their connection in New York and help to spark the Jets on the offensive side of the ball.

The New York Jets haven’t made the postseason since 2010. The last time they won the AFC East was in 2002. It will now be interesting to see if they turn the team over to Justin Fields, or if they bring in another quarterback to compete with him, be it through the NFL Draft, trade, or free agency.
